History/Background: http://bokunoheroacademia.wikia.com/wiki/Izuku_Midoriya
Personality: Note: “Deku” is a nickname used often for Midoriya, and I tend to use it interchangeably depending on context.
“Deku is a person who is useless at everything” and “Deku gives me a feeling of never giving up” - two statements made with all sincerity about the very same boy that ends up being the hero of our story. From Zero to Hero, Midoriya starts off as your atypical shone protagonist, a boy who is shy and without friends, who slowly grows into the inspirational fighting spirit that makes shonen manga the one genre I’ll never fucking escape.
Let’s start with “useless at everything.” By the age of four, a kid’s “quirk” -basically, a super power- is supposed to manifest, but unluckily for Midoriya, his quirk never manifested, and his biology indicated he would never develop one. Though the name “Deku” (roughly translates to “scrub”) came before he learned of his quirkless state, for the next few years, its definition sticks out as his defining trait. He had no quirk, but still he insisted that some day he would become a super hero. This persistence did not make him a lot of friends, and in fact became the target of a great deal of bullying through out his life - even his third year teacher mocks him in front of the class. So as he grew up, he had no friends, and was mostly just left on his own, spending most of his time devoted to learning all about how cool Heros are.
But “never giving up” is what really defines Midoriya. Time and time again he is told that he would never become a hero, but all the way to his third year in middle school, he wouldn’t quit on his dream to become a hero - he believed with all certainty that he would, one day, get into his dream school of Yuuei and become a hero. So in a lot of ways, even though he was bullied, it seems clear that he just gives no bones about what anyone had to say- haters to the left! Midoriya doesn’t even seem to express small sadness over the bullying he cares so little about the haters. Through out the series, never giving up is his defining trait. He is tenacious to a fault, and believes strongly in himself where no one else will.
Inspired by heroes almost exclusively, Midoriya grows up into an odd boy who, in the face of all danger, will leap forward and save someone even at the expense of himself- even knowing that he was likely the only one around without a quirk to defend himself with. He did it as a kid, rushing to Bakugou’s aid when the boy fell into the river- as a child, defending a student against Bakugou and his cronies- and even as a teenager, keeping forward to save Bakugou, caught by a sludge villain. It doesn’t matter who he’s trying to save, Midoriya will do it without a second thought. Though Bakugou is our mostly frequent damsel in distress, he also leaps in idiotically to save Uraraka, Iida, Kouta, and even All Might!!
Midoriya’s tenacity and courage are the main reasons All Might is inspired to pass his quirk onto Midoriya - this quirk, called One for All, is a rare (practically unheard of) quirk which can be inherited so long as the giver is willing. So, by the time Midoriya enters Yuuei, he’s fully quirked and ready to hero!! But it’s not just All Might that Midoriya inspires… in fact, there’s hardly a person out there that doesn’t think to themselves “What would Deku do?” During a preliminary exercise, Aizawa claims that he would expel the student who placed last over all, but after watching Midoriya over come the flaw in his quirk’s recoil damage, Aizawa lies and states that he had no intention of expelling anyone and that it was a logical ruse. He also inspires Kouta to like heroes again after the loss of his parents; and Iida and Uraraka constantly ask themselves “What would Deku do?” It’s the inspiration he brought them that, for a brief time, scored him the position of class president!
So, it’s clear that Midoriya has some quality about him that inspires others, right? Midoriya does take inspiration from others as well; two in particular. His worst offense is constantly copying All Might- it’s almost embarrassing how much it happens too. Midoriya’s hero costume has rabbit-ear like things that are a clear reference to All Mights weird antenna things. He also has a grin-like neck guard, a mimic of All Might’s constant smile. He ALSO likes to name his moves the same way All Might does, which is [american city/state] [some powerful sound]. DETROIT SMASH! Like that. But All Might, his all time hero and idol, isn’t the only person he likes to mimic, as it turns out.
The next is, surprisingly, Bakugou. As a child, Midoriya was bullied by everyone- but Bakugou sticks out, for they were once best friends, living in the same neighborhood and having been childhood friends and are classmates even now. In their youth, Bakugou was just short of cruel, considering himself better than everyone around him. Still, Midoriya followed him, and it seems they were closest of all of Bakugou’s friends, and it isn’t until the incident at the river that their relationships plummets. Still, a lot of it is masked in flashbacks. Although Midoriya claims that he has an extremely difficult time dealing with Bakugou, it’s been noted that Midoriya has stolen Bakugou’s moves. He also is prone to ask “What would Bakguou do?” when in tough situations: take for example when he, Mineta, and Tsuyu must fend off a hoard of villains. Before completely crystalizing his plan, he asks himself the same question of Bakugou -“What would Bakugou do?”- before initiating his plan (at which point he shouts “DIIIIIIIIEEEEEE” as he jumps in head first). Despite the clear tension and reluctance, Midoriya looks up to Bakugou’s strength and determination, and has said so himself.
Besides superhero bullshit, Midoriya is unsurprisingly shy and very polite. He addresses everyone with -kun or -san, and struggles terribly when Tsuyu insists he not call her by her last name- but he tries hard to correct himself, “Asu-, Tsuyu!” While still getting to know her, Uraraka embarrasses the daylights out of poor Midoriya, who covers his face and looks away any time she leans too close - though as they’ve grown he’s relaxed around her. Vida, who called him out during the Yuuei entrance exam, scares the daylights out of him up until Iida’s apology. Midoriya has been with his classmates for a few months now, so much of his shyness has waned.
Although shy is probably the first impression one might get from Midoriya, it’s hardly his true nature. A certain part of Midoriya is extremely invasive. Like super invasive, this kid keeps notes on all his classmates about what their powers are and some of the moves they use - he even devised a plan for Uraraka to defeat Bakugou (his notes on Bakugou are extensive, having kept notes on him even during middle school). Along with keeping notes on people Midoriya has no qualms with getting into other people’s business, such telling Todoroko to own his quirks -BOTH of his quirks- or Todoroki would never overcome his weaknesses. It’s not so much that he sneaks and spies for these things, but just a matter that he takes a lot of notes and keeps track of them.
Midoriya ends up being a very clever boy thanks to this aspect. When Bakugou and he go head to head on the hero vs villains training exercise, Midoriya is able to (more or less) stand his own against Bakugou even without using his quirk- Midoriya even managed to successfully ‘capture’ Bakugou during their skirmish, although Bakugou disregarded the rule and continued his pursuit. Midoriya also deduces that he could maximize the use of his punches by directing each attack into the tip of his finger, giving him roughly 8+ hits (each hit breaks a finger, though he has gone beyond reason). It’s also thanks to Midoriya’s quick wit that him, Kirishima, Iida, and Momo are able to save Bakugou from a tight situation without getting into any confrontations.
Last but not least, CERTAINLY not least, Midoriya is a cry baby. He cries when All Might picks him as his successor, he cries when Uraraka says she’ll be on his team for the sports fest, he cries when Bakugou gets kidnapped and he’s not able to save Bakugou; and of course he cries as All Might’s secret is revealed to the world. This has no major importance to the story, except that it makes it very clear that Midoriya just has a lot of feelings, and cries often when he’s overwhelmed with some emotion or another. In one of the info section, it states, that “Midoriya’s tear ducts are giving his sweat glands a run for their money!”
Skills/Abilities: Midoriya is the 9 successor of One for All, a quirk mutated from the combination of two quirks- the first was a quirk that could be inherited (with no other traits), the second quirk was granted by All for One and stockpiled power. Because of his quirk, Midoriya has access to the strength of “countless men and women.” When using his power “One for All Full Cowl”, Midoriya has access to 5% of his full strength without any repercussions. If he were to go beyond that threshold, his body would suffer severe damage at the expense of extreme power.
Going back isn’t so hard. Midoriya was quirkless before obtaining One for All, though he has clearly worked out since the beginning of the series. Though Midoriya’s strength probably isn’t boxing-champion levels, he’s probably like “potential flyweight boxer.” Either way, I wouldn’t get in a fist fight with him if I were you.
Beyond that, Midoriya is hella inspirational, extremely clever, and something of a tactician - he is generally the mind behind all the schemes he gets involved with.
Magic Weapon: A pair of brass knuckles- which aren’t actually brass, but the name is more familiar. Though seemingly matching, the right hand has a spike-like carve to them, while the left is rounded off. Without magic, brass knuckles focus the impact point when punching, as well as protect the user’s fingers from damage.
Magical aura gathers around his fist before hand to both increase the power of a punch as well as cushion against any recoil damage. At lower levels, it takes about 90% of his mana to deal a 200% damage punch (sort of like a critical hit), and he can only focus in exponential increments (5%, 10%, 20%, etc). At the highest level, Midoriya can get as much as 400% into a 90% punch, and can focus the strength output more accurately (5%,10%, 15%…. 50%, 60%, etc). Greater mana consumption requires a longer pause to gather the magic around his weapon. Any punches that exceed 90% are extremely powerful, but at that point all stops are out, and the attack will result in Midoriya blacking out.

[ Mumble mumble: ] …. but I should notice that One for All is gone, shouldn’t I? That’s sort of a lot of power to just suddenly lose but I feel the same as normal…. Then again, it’s not like I felt it come in at first. I guess I can’t be sure, since I didn’t have a quirk to start… [ So on Midoriya walks like this, quietly mumbling to himself as he considers exactly the situation he was in. His carrier rabbit sits atop his head, quietly and passively comfortable in the unruly mat of hair. His finger over his lip, he walked with his head down, pondering aloud, unaware of the weird looks he’s getting. ]
I guess there’s always asking around about- ah? Woah!! [ He stops mid sentences, arms reaching out as he catches the rabbit that slips off his head perfectly. He lifts he animal up to smile at it. ] Sorry, little guy. I’ll try to walk more carefully for you. [ Placing the rabbit back on his head, he pauses to look around. ]
Guess I should head back…. I wonder if it’s just me here? [ He thinks cautiously of his friends at home. ]

REVISION
Re: REVISION
He wasn’t alone in this either. He listened too often in on the conversations of others, taking notes in a small notebook, trying to understand everything he could about this place. Too many missed their home as much as he missed his. They all had places to be, responsibilities left behind; they were pulled unwillingly into a cause they may or may not have wanted to fight for. He understood it, and yet there was more to it. A war did not involve only willing participants - A hero was made to protect the ones truly unwilling, who had no power against warring bodies of power.
As much as he wanted to go home, he couldn’t abandon this place - even if he were unable. If it was his help they had wanted, it is his help they will get. He wanted to be here, and until they no longer needed him or anyone else, he felt that he would rather stay. A beacon of hope does not just stop burning because it was in a new place. A hero’s job was to protect everyone, and Midoriya would nothing less for this kingdom than he would any other.
