HISTORY:
PERSONALITY: To be able to understand who Keith is, it’s important to know where he’s coming from. Keith didn’t grow up an orphan, but his mother left the family shortly after he was born. His father never explained why she left, and so he never understood. Consequently, e grew up believing she had abandoned them. His father, a firefighter, lost his life presumably saving someone, and thus, as Keith saw it, his father had abandoned him as well. This misunderstanding of intentions led Keith to grow into his teens as an orphan, feeling that he had nowhere in the world that he belonged and that no one in the world would ever make a place for him.
By the time Keith was roughly 14, he’d made up his mind that he wanted nothing to do with anyone around him. He was a troubled boy who made trouble because he could and actively sought out ways to make those around him hate him. He’d done as much in his first flight simulation, breaking formation just to get everyone in trouble - a quick way to get everyone against him. He did the very same thing when he first met Shiro, stealing his car just to try to upset him and drive him away.
If not for Shiro entering his life, it’s hard to say if Keith would have found a place on Earth. Shiro inspired Keith, made him proud and happy in many ways. Shiro was and is someone Keith looks up to and aspires to be like and it’s probably fair to say that Shiro may very well be the most important person to Keith which I’ll touch here and there as I try to get to more important personality points.
At the very beginning of Voltron, we understand that Shiro is taken hostage by an alien race called the Galra; but the specifics were a mystery down on Earth. It was reported that the ship sent out to Kerberos crashed due to “Pilot error”--Keith, of course, refused to believe this, persisting on Shiro's well-documented skill as a pilot. He is stubborn to a fault and worst of all when it relates to Shiro. So much is his stubbornness that he in a fit of rage, as is reported in interviews, punched Iverson, a high-ranking officer, in the face and got himself expelled from the Galaxy Garrion. This fiery temper is no doubt what drew the Red Lion to him in the first place. Later on, when Shiro goes missing again, Keith aggressive and frustratedly announces that there is no Voltron without Shiro.
His aggressiveness comes out in a lot of ways. He has a short temper, he’s easy to excite, he doesn’t much like dealing with annoying things, and he’s deadly in a fight. In the earlier episodes, Keith and Lance get into a strange rivalry-esque standoff as they plummet their lions face-first into the sand to prove… well, something. Keith can become remarkably dumb around Lance, as if the other young man triggers an unhinged part of Keith.
That said…. Keith didn’t exactly know who Lance was, even though they were cadets side-by-side at the Galaxy Garrison. When Lance proposed a rivalry between them, Keith openly asked who the heck Lance was even. Keith didn’t seem to have a clue about Hunk either, who similarly was a cadet alongside Keith for a few years. Keith grew up with only his father in mind and lived far out in the desert without any neighboring kids to play with and no siblings to get to know. Combine that with his past, self-destructive behaviour, unsurprisingly, Keith didn’t exactly care much for anyone around him.
Keith proves time and time again that he’s not super great with people. Perhaps one of his most remarkable lines is his inability to understand this take on a popular cheer: “I say ‘Vol,’ you say ‘Tron!’” So what does Keith say in answer? “Voltron?” I’ll come back to his inability to be a normal participant in society because the rest pertains more to how he grows up! Related, I should say, as much as he’s not super great with people, Keith still maintains a healthy dose of sass and attitude.
Shiro sees more potential in Keith than Keith ever has in himself, and this much becomes apparent in season two, episode one when Shiro tells Keith that if something should ever happen to him, Keith should become the new Leader of Voltron. Keith denies him, saying that nothing will ever happen to Shiro; and this problem persists. Keith, in his youth, never believed that he was suitable to be a leader and a lot of the conflict in season three and part of four is that Keith cannot see himself as someone who can lead. A good mixture of his lack of tact and potential for greatness is when Lance goes to Keith asking for advice. Keith inadvertently makes Lance’s feelings worse by poorly dismissing them, but shortly after gives up his place in both the Red and Black lions so that Lance and Shiro can have their place in Voltron as he sees they deserve. The feeling of inadequacies only grows as his relationship with Shiro becomes tense as they struggle as competing leaders of Voltron, and so he departs to work with the Blades of Marmora, a group of Galra resisting against the Galra Empire.
The last of Keith’s base personality is likely that he, by nature, wants to save people. We see it a million times throughout the series, especially regarding Shiro. As the story progresses, Keith puts his own life on the line a dozen with the aim and hope to save someone else. While admirable, at times it comes off as him valuing the lives of others over his own, even when its only one other life at stake. If it’s not obvious, he takes after his father in this way.
Most of Keith takes after his mother, a Galra who works against the empire, and she ends up inspiring the most change in Keith’s personality. This man who used to be stubborn, fiery, and rash comes back after a long absence as a level-headed, powerful person, and takes the helm of Voltron in a heartbeat. Whatever lack of confident Keith possessed before had been dashed away as if finding his mother finally settled something deep inside his heart.
Keith’s personality shift is enough that it makes him feel somewhat different, but still clearly the same, fiery young man he used to be. While level-headed now, with the right amount of pressure, Keith will still lose his cool, as we saw when the Paladins were lost in space. As an example, he would murder the “Small World” Disney World ride. Annoying things are going to annoy him.
He’s still as uncomfortable with people as he always was, but he has a better sense of people than he did. When Hunk is hurt about his parents’ imprisonment, Keith talks his friend through his struggles and offer care and support; very unlike the Keith of youth. Granted, he still looks hella awkward when Hunk grabs him for a hug but eases into it nonetheless. In general, Keith does better in serious situations and struggles with more casual interactions.
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
- Swordmanship
- General ass-whooping skills - Keith's face-to-face fighting style involves more evasion tactics.
- Galra Blood - Half-alien. Under pressure/arousal, his body changes slightly - cat-like eyes, sharp teeth, sharp claws. It's suggested that if his body were exposed to more quintessence, his Galra features would come out more. It's also interpreted that as he grows older, more of his Galra features will show.
- Quintessence sensitive - As a result of his time in the quantum abyss, Keith seems able to sense other people's life force, AKA their Quintessence. We've seen him take out guards by detecting their location. He has also sensed and predicted the location of an invisible enemy. So long as it's okay with mods, I would assume this ability would allow him to tell which faction people are from. I also intend to make a permission post for this one.
- Volton Paladin - Not that I ever think this skill will be relevant in Fellden. As a memeber of Voltron, Keith has a special connection with his lion that helps him pilot it. At his canon point, he's not the Black Paladin of Voltron at the moment, but he did already developed a bond with the lion earlier in the series. The major, affective ability it allows him is to summon the Black Lion to wherever he is so long as it's "close enough" - but he hasn't developed this talent yet at his canon point either.
INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
- Blade of Marmora Uniform - It's actually a spacesuit. When the hood is pulled up, a space mask can go over his face and conceal it.
- His mother's sword - At its neutral state, it's only as long as a knife. When activated, its size increases.
- Space Wolf - Besides typical dog things, his companion has the ability to teleport short and mid-distances. So long one is touching him, he can bring multiple passengers along for the ride.
FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars
REASON: Keith has a history for of first, think later. Though he's gotten better in his age, it stands that Keith would sooner act based on his feelings than the facts at hand, and prioritizes doing what feels morally right over anything else.
TATTOO: Little Dipper, over his heart

Hey, I'm looking for an engineer or technician to work on something, preferably with some aesthetics sense. No details over the network so contact me for a meeting time. It'll make more sense in person, anyway.
Court of Stars, if any of you need a combat trainer, contact me.
I'm making a habit of being at that tavern by the Port in Krys nightly, so if anyone needs me, I'm there.
